Fashion Forward Fall 2014

4709648080_ffb178c20e_oThe runways of New York frequently offer a glimpse into coming trends in home design and décor and this year was no exception. Couture designers innovative and fashion forward collections lead the way in trends for home design.

Trends from the fashion runway for Fall 2014 include:

  • Art Deco – The bright appeal of Art Deco inspired prints popped up on the fabrics in the Prada line up.  Expect to see the colors and cubist styling of this interesting era in art history showing up in fabrics and fine art in the coming months.
  • Illusionary Art – Use of optical illusion style black and white geometric prints were plentiful in the Dries Van Noten collection. Accessories that capitalize on the illusion with black and white geometrics will be adding interest to sophisticated homes this autumn.
  • Herringbone – Chevron’s more complicated cousin will be prominent in flooring, fabrics and wall coverings. However, it has the potential to pop up unexpectedly in interesting accessory choices.
  • Rich metals – Copper, brass and bronze continue to add richness to the runway looks of designers such as Chloe. These lustrous materials will be present in sophisticated design through accessories, wall coverings and even fabrics.
  • Chinoiserie – The delicate nature of this European homage to Chinese art was highlighted in the Valentino collection. In home design, expect to see this intricate and feminine floral motif in art, upholstery and wall covering.
  • Shibori – The sophisticated and elegant precursor to tie-dye, this Japanese art form has found resurgence in modern fashion for Fall 2014. Expect to see this luxurious watermark in tiles, fabrics and rugs.
