Innovation: Smart Home Thermostats

The market for gadgets that promise to increase automation of home processes and to make our lives infinitely easier continues to grow at an exponential rate. The Smart Home is no longer science fiction fodder, but an expanding reality.

One such device that has application in the modern home is a smart thermostat. Two models show strong sales in the market are the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat and the Nest Learning Thermostat. While the two devices are similar, there are significant differences in the functionality and styling of each.

Both devices are controllable via web based or mobile apps (iOS and Android), which give the user the ability to control the heat and cooling of the home remotely. Left for vacation in a hurry? Forgot to adjust the air conditioning before heading out? No problem. Log in and make the change.

The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat and the Nest both show the current temperature on their display. The Nest, however, takes a much more minimalist approach by simply showing the current room temperature, while the Honeywell model offers the current room temperature, schedule, current outdoor temperature and the current humidity reading. Stylistically, the Nest is extremely minimal and sleek. The Honeywell has more of the traditional thermostat styling, but the screen is customizable to complement the décor of the room.

Both the Nest and the Honeywell thermostats promise to learn your living patterns as you use them, eliminating the necessity to adjust or schedule your temperature adjustments. Both the Honeywell and the Nest thermostats offer energy savings as usage of heat and cooling energy can be adjusted to accommodate for times when the home is empty.

Both devices are comparably priced and indicate that a DIY installation is a relatively simple process. One additional note: the Nest Learning Thermostat comes with two sizes of wall plates for installation providing options to cover the space where the former thermostat was installed and the Honeywell model installation kit does not provide these options.
